General Questions

What qualifies your coffee as organic?

Ruta Maya Coffee has been USDA certified organic by The Texas Department of Agriculture for over two decades. Organic farming is integral to our business as it represents the health of our farmers, our consumers, and our environment. No genetically modified ingredients can be found in our products. FDA guidelines prohibit a product to be certified organic if contains traces of GMOs.

Are you Fair-Trade Certified?

Our business is built on direct relationships with Maya farmer cooperatives. Fair trade is a great thing, but it only guarantees farmers a percentage of the full fair market price and any subsequent costs are passed on to the consumer. We cut out the middleman and pay our farmers full fair market price directly. The farmer gets higher pay than they would from a purveyor, we get the coffee for less than we would from an end broker, and that savings is passed on to our customers.

Allergens?

We only roast coffee in our warehouse. There is no chance of gluten, nut, or dairy cross-contamination. Those with sensitivities can consume our products without worry.

Do you have K-Cups?

We made the decision to refrain from adding single-use pods to our product line in support of our sustainability efforts. We encourage the use of reusable pods in machines that take them.

Brewing and Storage

What brewing method do you recommend?

Our beans are compatible with all brewing methods and appliances. Individual preferences change routinely, but we always enjoy a good french press.

How should I grind my beans?

Using the appropriate grind for your appliance is instrumental to a successful brew. We recommend the following, but encourage incremental experimentation to find the flavor that best suits your unique palate.

  • Espresso: Fine Grind

  • Pour Over: Medium-Fine Grind

  • Drip Pots: Medium Grind

  • Chemex: Medium-Coarse Grind

  • French Press: Coarse Grind

  • Cold Brew: Extra Coarse Grind

How should I store my beans?

Store beans in a dark, cool, and dry place to preserve the quality of your purchase. Our kraft paper bags are double-lined and resealable with a one-way valve making them suitable for long-term storage. As for our hand sewn burlap bags, we suggest transferring beans to an airtight container to increase longevity.

How long does peak freshness last?

Our bags come marked with a fresh-by date that extends anywhere from 6 months to a year plus.
